Six reasons why you need a reusable water bottle
“Bottled water companies don't produce water, they produce plastic bottles”. Some might argue that the quality of bottled water is better, but studies have shown that most bottled water is simply tap water that has been filtered and bottled at up to 1000x the price. Obviously, price is not the only reason to make the change from single-use bottles to reusable ones. There are so many reasons why a reusable bottle is preferred over plastic ones, but I think with these six you will have plenty of reasons to convert you, if you have not already made the switch.
Plastic bottles harm the environment. Everyday a staggering 1.3 billion water bottles are used globally. This means that every minute 1 million bottles are used. The vast majority of those are not being recycled, so billions of water bottles end up in our environment each year. That is a lot of plastic pollution! Using a reusable water bottle is a swap you can easily make in your life, which will avoid using many single-use bottles.
Plastic bottles release toxins. Most single-use plastic bottles are made out of PET (with plastic label #1) or polyethylene terephthalate, a type of polyester. It is widely used in the clothing industry (it is wrinkle-free) and is also used for insulation (pillows, upholstery), carpet and mouldings. PET may leach antimony trioxide which is considered a possible carcinogen. PET can also leach phtalates, a chemical linked to to asthma, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, breast cancer, obesity and type II diabetes, low IQ and neurodevelopmental issues, to name a few. The potential for release increases with time and warm temperatures (which is why this kind of plastic should not be reused). I opt for glass and stainless steel reusable bottles, since reusable plastic water bottles raise fears regarding BPAs and phthalates leaching into their contents.
It’s cheaper to use reusable bottles. Yes, reusable bottles require some investment, but it pays itself back very quickly when you consider the cost of a single-use water bottle. Thankfully, more and more places -indoors and outdoors- have water fountains to refill your bottle.
It´s more stylish to use a reusable bottle. With so many beautiful styles and types of bottles on the market, there is no excuse to not have a reusable bottle. Be a trendsetter by joining the movement of reusables.
Reusable bottles are more convenient. Stainless steel bottles can keep cold drinks cold and hot drinks hot for quite some time, so you can have your hot tea or cold water whenever, wherever.
It’s healthier. When you have water on you all the time, you are more inclined to drink more. Add to that all the chemicals that are not entering your body!
Some might argue that the effects of plastics on people are not yet known, but I think it is better to be safe than sorry (especially with kids who are so much smaller) and there are so many options out there that are better for our kids and our planet, so why not change?
I noticed that some of these bottles have silicone elements and was wondering if it is a safe component, so I looked it up and it is not toxic to aquatic or soil organisms. It is not biodegradable, but it is quite durable and can be recycled after a lifetime of use.
