STUDY34

STUDY34, a knitwear design company focusing on responsible fashion using sustainable materials, was driven by frustration founder Eleanor O´Neill was having and her observations of the fashion industry. Eleanor, with a degree in Fashion Knitwear, became annoyed with the lack of creativity, and frustrated by how limiting her job as a designer was. Being in charge of drawing an item and not involved in the technical process of how to make up the garments, she felt like she wasn’t improving any skills. She wanted to create a role that would allow her to see and be involved in the supply chain from start to finish, from sourcing the fibers through marketing the finished product and experiencing every process along the way. Working this way has allowed Eleanor to better understand the impact of her decisions on the environment and on others in the supply chain and challenges her to be a better designer with every style she makes.

In addition to craftsmanship, Eleanor is particularly passionate about sustainability, women and business. While STUDY34 strives to encompass all of the above, as the founder she also contributes to several organizations built on similar or complementary values, some of which are: The Girl´s Network, The Prince´s Trust, The Circle NGO and Traidcraft.

Eleanor designs all items in her Newcastle based studio and works directly with Teresa, the production manager at Incalpaca in Arequipa, Peru, where STUDY34 knitwear is made. The yarns uses in STUDY34 garments are made with 100% natural fibers of the highest quality, like baby alpaca (from the finest 20% of the adult alpaca fleece), royal alpaca (the highest grade of alpaca) and Pima cotton. All the fibers are spun into yarns at Inca Tops, also located in Arequipa, Peru.

Eleanor also writes a blog on running the business as well as articles about issues surrounding ethics and sustainability in the fashion industry for The Huffington Post and Courier Magazine.

Based: Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

Ships to: Worldwide.

Products: Women's knitwear.

Mission: To provide women with luxury knitwear, for everyday.

Vision: To be involved in the supply chain from start to finish: from sourcing the fibers through to marketing the finished product and experiencing every process along the way. This allows me to better understand the impact my decisions have on the environment and others in the supply chain and consequently challenges me to be a better designer every day. With every STUDY 34 style produced, I seek to understand in greater depth the way clothes are made and in doing so, encourage my customers to be equally inquisitive about who made their clothes.
