Swedish Stockings
Swedish Stockings was launched by founders Linn Frisinger and Nadja Forsberg believing that the world needed more innovative and environmentally conscious products to lead the way. A forerunner in sustainably produced hosiery, Swedish Stockings produces beautiful products made from recycled yarns. Their factories engage in sustainable practises including the use of environmentally friendly dyes, post-dyeing water treatment and the use of solar power for much of the energy needed in the manufacturing process.
Currently, nylon yarn is used to produce most pantyhose, which is created from an environmentally harmful petroleum-based manufacturing process that leads to damaging carbon emissions. Swedish Stockings is proud to combine sustainability, quality and great design and hope their customers will feel the same pride in wearing them. Each year, two billion pairs of pantyhose are produced, worn once and then discarded. This makes the textile industry the second most polluting industry in the world. Swedish Stockings sees it as their mission to change and influence the entire hosiery industry by showing others that you can produce hosiery sustainably, without sacrificing great quality and design.
The pantyhose at Swedish Stockings are created from pre and post-consumer nylon waste. The production process is. a lot less harmful to the environment than traditional nylon production and the search for innovative and cleaner ways to produce is an ongoing process. For example, they are conserving or reusing water, decreasing emissions and reducing and recycling waste. There is also a recycling program, in which you send old stockings (any brand) to the recycling center and you will receive a discount code by email.
The aim is to fully recycle old hosiery. However, to make that possible the polyamide in the yarn (the nylon) needs to be separated from the elastane (the stretchy stuff) so new pantyhose can be made. Unfortunately, this technology isn't available just yet. In the meantime, Swedish Stockings grinds old pantyhose down into fiber glass tanks for oil traps for the commercial industry. These tanks are extremely hard wearing and last a long time and the pantyhose don't end up in landfills.
